Enjoy the benefit of watching enlarged images on your TV screen from several smartphone brands, iPhone, iPod, iPad plus other MID tablets. As well there may be many times when you would like to share pictures, video, movies or games from these small devices onto a big tv screen with friends and family.
Smartphone to TV set connection – First and foremost is to check that your smartphone has an internet browser installed in its operating system as this is required to access internet websites to then mirror portray these sites on your tv set. Popular smartphone web browsers are Opera Mini, Bolt Browser, Skyfire (runs on Google Android, iOS, Windows Mobile and Symbian S60), Dolphin HD (which is a considered a must-have for Android users because it can handle Flash and HTML 5 sites without hassle), Mobile Firefox, Mobile Safari, Xscope (a web browser for Android users), Opera Mobile, Microsoft IE for Mobile (for standard browser experience, this browser is the best choice) – Google Android which comes free with Android and acts as a native browser on G1. It features zoom capability, touch screen feature and display image-rich websites.
Next consider the brand of smartphone that you may be purchasing or already own since there are several methods by which you can connect your smartphone to yout tv set either using cables, docking devices or wireless. Popular well known smartphone brands are BlackBerry, Samsung, Motorola, LG, HTC, Nokia and of course the iPhone (Apple’s products we cover seperately below). As well there are numerous less known brands available and cheaper brands coming on the market continuously. So it’s advantageous to shop for a smartphone with the appropriate features that serve your purpose. When shopping consider the operating system installed on smartphones since Android managed to become the world’s most popular smartphone platform in 2011 (dethroning Symbian) which may result in more new brands coming onto the market containing the Android operating system – apart from Apple products that continue in popularity dominance.
As mentioned there are several methods by which you can connect your smartphone to yout tv set the most common being either using a HDMI cable or USB adapter cable connection with HDMI cable which we outine below
HDMI cable connection method – inspect your smart phone to see if it has a “Micro-D” size HDMI-Out port. If so, use a cable type with a “Micro D” size HDMI male plug at one end of the cable to connect into your smartphone socket and having a standard “A size” type HDMI male plug at the other end to connect into the HDMI-in port of your HDTV set. (Note that both type D & A size type HDMI plugs contain 19 pins but the D type size is smaller to fit into a smartphone whereas the A type is the standard size to fit into a HDTV set) (Cable type available in various lengths shown at left side – not for standard tv set). Make sure your HDTV is set to the correct HDMI output on the monitor so you can view the smartphone’s video capabilities. When you connect the smartphone to your HDTV using the HDMI cable, the phone turns itself into a touch pad allowing you to easily control viewing on your television set. Play a presentation, video or slide show stored on your smart phone or view websites and they will appear on your television screen. Buy a 10 ft (3m) long cable for approx $ 3 from Amazon at High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet Type A to Type D (Micro HDMI), 10 FT / 3 M
USB adapter connection method - for smartphones with USB “Micro-B” size in-ports, use an USB Micro-B size to HDMI (Female-A size) adapter cable. Attach the Micro-B plug into your smartphone USB micro in-port and connect the other end of the adapter cable having a female standard A size HDMI socket into a male A size HDMI plug extension cable and then connect the extension cable other end A size HDMI cable male plug into your HDTV set (note for HD not for standard tv sets). The electric charger supplied with your mobile device must be connected for the HDMI video & audio to function. An electrical charger can be pluged into the side of the adapter into its female plug in port. The adapter shown here is an Accell brand approx 10 ins (25 cms) long and is available from Amazon.com for approx $ 24 US at Accell J135B-001B MHLTM (USB Micro-B) to HDMI (Female-A) Adapter
Regular A size HDMI male plug ends extension cables are available in various lengths and we have included here a popular 15 ft (4.6 m) cable available from Amazon.com for approx $ 7 at Mediabridge Ultra Series – High Speed HDMI Cable – Category 2 Certified – Supports 3D & Audio Return Channel – (15 Feet)HDMI Video Cables)
Apple’s iPhone connection methods:
(A) Use Apple Digital AV Adapter to connect an iPhone to your HD TV set by first inserting the 30 pin male plug into your iPhone slot from one end of the 5 ins (11 cms) apadpter device and connecting a male HDMI plug into the other female end of the adapter cable which is split into two connector plugs, one for the HDMI female plugin and the other connector containing another 30 pin female socket plug for connecting to an electrical power source that lets you charge your iPhone while you are connected to your HD TV set. This adapter sells for $39 US at the Apple strore or buy it from Amazon.com at a savings. Apple MC953ZM/A Digital AV Adapter ZML
(B) Apple Component AV Cable If your TV set has components video then, it is best to get the component video cables to get the best quality display. However, composite video cables are more standard, and almost any TV set has composite video in but not every TV set has component video. The Component AV Cable connects to your iPhone or Universal Dock (see below) via the 30-pin dock connector and to your TV, home theater receiver, or stereo receiver via the component (Y, Pb, and Pr) video and red/white analog audio ports. This cable connector also features a USB connector that you can plug into a power source, such as a computer or the USB Power Adapter, available separately. This cable doesn’t do mirroring, but it will route video-enabled apps, photos, and music to your TV. It’s compatible with all iPhone models.
Note that if you’re using the Apple Component AV Cable, high resolution videos will be shown in HD quality. When the cable is connected to your TV set, an application that supports playing video to an external display will automatically use it when playing video. Set the TV signal to NTSC or PAL: Choose Video > TV Signal and select NTSC or PAL. NTSC and PAL are TV broadcast standards, used in different regions. If you’re in the Americas, NTSC is probably the correct choice. Elsewhere, try PAL. If you’re not sure, check the documentation that came with your TV set. This device sells for $39 US at the Apple store or buy it at Amazon.com at a savings. APPLE COMPONENT AV cable-ZML [Retail Packaging]
(C) Apple Composite AV Cable is useful for more standard and almost any TV set, connects to your iPhone or Apple Universal Dock (see below) via the 30-pin dock connector on your iPhone and to your TV set via the composite video and red/white analog audio ports. This cable connector also features a USB connector that you can plug in to a power source.
A unavoidable problem with using composite video is that picture information is lost when component video is compressed into composite format. So when the television tries to convert the composite signal back to component video, it can’t recover the entire original signal. The result is that the final video image on the screen is diminished so that the picture is not as crisp and clean, and the colors aren’t as accurate and rich as they would have been had the composite video compression been avoided. This device sells for $39 US at the Apple store or buy it at Amazon.com at a savings. APPLE COMPOSITE AV cable ZML
(D) Apple Universal Dock requires either the Apple Composite AV Cable or the Apple Component AV Cable for use with iPhone. These Apple Geniune Universal Docks allow you to charge and sync all iPhone (and also iPod models that use a dock connector). Included in the package from Apple is the Universal Dock, an Apple Remote control device, 5 dock Adapters that fit various models of iPhones & iPods and a User Guide manual. The advantage of using this dock is that you can continouosly charge your iPhone while viewing transferred video & audio to your TV set and navigate your viewing channels using your remote control device from the comfort of your couch. The Apple Universal dock support TV out when used with an iPhone model that supports TV out. (check specs) This device sells for $59 US at the Apple store or buy it at Amazon.com at a savings. MID Tablets to TV set connection Most mobile internet tablets offer all the features of a smartphone, but are larger in size. Tablets screen sizes from 7 ins (18 cms) to 10 ins (25.5 cms) makes them more suitable for web browsing, watching videos and reading ebooks than the 3 ins (7.5 cms) to 4 ins (10 cms) screens found on smartphones. One of the best features of tablets however, is that they are fast to switch on and load, making them ideal for occasional web browsing, rather than waiting for a laptop to boot up. Tablets are primarily designed for interactive entertainment, whether that’s listening to music, watching movies, reading ebooks, playing games or surfing the web.
Connections from tablets to tv sets is similar to smartphones, using HDMI cable and/or USB adapter connection methods mentioned above. Some brands of tablets have only one connecting port type while others have two or more so you need to inspect the brand of tablet being considered in order to determine the appropriate connection method. And of course check that a tablet has the appropriate internet browser installed in its operating system to access the internet websites in order to then mirror portray on your tv set.
Technology continues to evolve with new tablets containing new features and apps coming onto the market and this information can be readily found on the internet. PC magazine (pcmag.com) and Cnet (reviews.cnet.com) are two websites that provide worthwhile reviews of new and existing tablets. And of course Amazon.com provides valuable actual buyer reviews and saving deals for purchasing tablets.
The very popular Apple iPad connects to a tv set using the same method as the iPhone, either using the Apple Digital AV Adapter with HDMI or component or composite cable methods indicated above. ( Remember to set the tv signal to NTSC or PAL by choosing Video > TV Signal on your iPad screen and select NTSC or PAL. Both NTSC and PAL are tv broadcast standards, used in different regions. If you’re in the Americas, NTSC is probably the correct choice; elsewhere, try PAL). But the iPad does not support video streaming with Adobe Flash, so to overcome this you need to get iSwifter software at Apple store for free as long as you have iTunes on your computer. As well the Apple store sells an alternative product, Skyfire’s iPad app which also provides flash streaming video for $4.99. For a comparison of these products go to iSWiFTER vs Skyfire vs AlwaysOnPC on iPad for Flash Websites
